The Judith Grant Scholarship
Judith Grant Fund Description
The Judith Grant Scholarship Fund assists high school seniors who are members of Ascension Church with a modest stipend if they will be attending college. The Scholarship Committee reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Vestry for awards. It is the Vestry and not the committee that has the ultimate decision-making responsibility.
About the Fund
The fund was created when, in 1993, Mrs. Louise Grant Rice provided funds in her Will, in honor of her niece, Judith Grant, “to the Rector, Wardens and Vestry of the Ascension Memorial Church, Ipswich Massachusetts, to establish the Judith Grant Scholarship Fund, to be invested and reinvested and the income therefrom paid annually to one or more worthy students, members of the parish, who shall be known as the Judith Grant Scholars.”
The original amount given in 1993 to Ascension for the Judith Grant Scholarship Fund was $62,000. That fund was invested and was managed by the Endowment Committee at Ascension, until recently, when it was transferred along with other endowment funds to the Diocesan Investment Trust (DIT).
Mrs. Rice’s Will did not specify any specific amounts that should be awarded to students. The decisions are delegated to the Rector and Vestry, who have authorized the Committee to vet applications and make recommendations. The Committee has made good-faith recommendations year-to-year based on the funds that are available, the number of applicants and the merit of the applications. In some years there are multiple applicants and in other years, none.

2025 Judith Grant Scholars
In 2025, The Scholarship Committee recommended to Vestry that they award a total of $22,000 to six college students who have been members of Ascension.
In the Spring, Vestry approved the recommendation to award a $4,500 scholarship to Charlie Quimby to help with his expenses at Fordham University in New York City.
The Committee subsequently recommended to Vestry that, because the balance in the Scholarship fund has grown significantly, previous awardees be invited to apply for additional Scholarships if they were still in college; completed an application created by the Committee; and had received their original Scholarship no more than four years earlier.
In August 2025, the Vestry approved the Committee’s recommendations and voted to award supplemental awards: $3,500 to Charlie Jepson (Trinity College, Economics & Architecture) $
3,500 to Peter Joss Green (Clark University, Spanish & Climate Studies)
$3,500 to Lily Paine (Hofstra University, Film TV)
$3,500 to Zachary Godfrey (Colorado School of Mines, Mechanical Engineering)
$3,500 to Caroline Jepsen (Trinity College, Biology)
